Human beings have always been active, but with industrialization and technological “advances,” we have become increasingly sedentary.
In the past, people walked to get around, food gathering and work were generally active tasks, which led to higher calorie expenditure. Additionally, our bodies are designed for movement, which is key to maintaining an energy balance between what we consume through food and what we burn through exercise or physical activity.
To start, let’s define:
Physical activity: Any activity that involves body movement.
Exercise: Any physical activity with a clear objective, goals, and a specific execution plan.
Sport: Any exercise governed by rules, specific norms, a mastery of sports techniques, constant training, and competition.
According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the energy expended during physical activity is essential for energy balance, weight control, and reducing the risk of many non-communicable diseases, such as hypertension, coronary heart disease, strokes, diabetes, breast and colon cancer, and depression.
Physiological: Improves blood pressure, blood sugar levels, cholesterol, and triglycerides, and helps with weight loss or maintenance, among others.
Psychological: Increases self-esteem, reduces anxiety, and decreases depressive symptoms, among others.
Work-related: Enhances productivity, reduces absenteeism, improves workplace atmosphere, and boosts corporate image.
Sexual: Improves the quality and frequency of sexual relations, increases the number of orgasms, and enhances self-image.
To enjoy these benefits, the recommendation is to engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity 5 to 7 days a week.
For weight loss, the recommendation remains the same, but the time increases to between 60 and 120 minutes per day.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines physical activity as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy consumption. In practice, this includes any movement, even during leisure time, commuting, work, or household activities. Both moderate and intense physical activity improve health. Common physical activities include walking, cycling, sports, and recreational activities. Everyone can engage in these activities based on their ability and enjoy the health benefits they provide.
